Important!! Please read the following information:
*For the next three weeks, you will receive a syllabus containing a list of activities, assignments, and homework. Students must copy homework in his/her planner order to establish a routine. Since our district is “going green” by conserving paper, in several weeks, students will be able to view the syllabus as displayed from a LCD projector in my classroom instead of receiving a paper syllabus. As usual, you must copy homework assignments in your planner. Students who desire a paper syllabus may go to my website to copy the syllabus. (See the blog website information at the top of this syllabus.) Have your parents contact me if they want you to have a paper syllabus so I will know how many to print.
*All students must bring writing utensils, their social studies spiral, folder, and planner to class each day.

Homework - Follow these directions carefully: Draw 8 boxes on a blank page in your spiral. Label each box
using the boldface title as see below. Fill each box using the instructions next to each subtopic
1. Chapter Focus Box - Cut and paste a sample of the Chapter Focus Box from your packet
2. Terms - Cut and paste a sample of the Terms from the sample of the Chapter Focus Box
3. Graphic Organizer Activity -Draw the Graphic Organizer Activity from pg. 138
4. Reference Atlas Map- Label and draw the symbols for a lake, river, and the color used to indicate the
desert.
5. Political Map-explain what is used to show borders thus separating the countries on the map on pg 700-701
6. Physical Map-name the types of land formations seen on the map on pg. 702-703
7. Spanish Glossary- Copy one word from the Spanish glossary and write its meaning next to the word
8. Primary Sources Library – Write the title of the first unit and the title of the article written by Mary Leaky- Due Friday

Please note the important information below:
• Reading logs are due on Wednesday, September 28. Students must read two or more books each month, log the book, and obtain a parent signature for each book read.
• Every two weeks students will receive a new list of Vocabra-Words; these will be their spelling and vocabulary words. The students will be tested on these words at the end of the two weeks. They will take a fill in the blank vocabulary test and a spelling test. The first tests will be on Friday, Sept 9.
• Mark your calendars! Picture Day is Monday, September 12 (information will be sent home soon) and Curriculum Night is Wednesday, September 14, at 6:30 P.M.
• Remember our team will be “going green.” We will discontinue giving students a paper syllabus in a few weeks. Students will be responsible for printing their own syllabus at home or at the media center. Please contact us if you do not have access to a computer and you need us to give you a syllabus.

Important!! Please read the following information:
*At the beginning of each week, your child will receive a syllabus containing a list of activities and homework. In addition, your child must copy only the homework in his/her planner. I plan to give each student a copy of the syllabus for approximately a month. In order to conserve paper, students will be not be given a paper syllabus anymore. Instead, students will be able to copy the homework in their planner while viewing my syllabus via a LCD projector or from my chalkboard. In addition, my syllabus will be posted on my blog website. (See the blog website information at the top of this syllabus.) By all means, students who desire a paper syllabus may go to my website to copy my syllabus.
*Since this is the first full week of classes and my students were told, last week, they must have a folder and spiral. I recommend that the folder and spiral be the same color. If your child does not have matching materials then they should simply use the materials they have. Do not purchase additional materials.

• The typed draft of Vital Statistics must be in proper format and is due on Tuesday, August 30. The typed final copy will be due Tuesday, September 6.

• Our final Team 6-3 PBIS Reward Day is going to be on Friday, May 27th during 8th and 9th period. Students will sign up for an outdoor activity and it will “cost” 15 Bee Tickets to participate.

• All the groups will meet on Wednesday, this week only, because of our field trip on Thursday. The Breadwinner and Code Talker groups will meet 8th period and the other 3 groups will during 9th period.

Homework- Finish artifact activity by writing a caption below the picture explaining two cultural elements for each artifact you drew last Friday, regarding the following artifacts: canopic jar, papyrus paper, faux gold ring, and faux sarcophagus. Note this example:
After observing the American penny, the Americans must have had a government and several natural resources. A government because there is a profile of an important person and usually cultures would place their leaders on their coins. They had to have copper as a natural resource and know how to create copper products in order to create the coin.

*Last Monday, my students were told to locate a new Newsbowl article for their newly assigned topic. The news must be regarding notable news for the week beginning Feb. 27-March 5th because there will be a Jeopardy Newsbowl competition on Thursday.
*Students wishing to participate in our next Newsbowl competition, on Thursday, must have completed the article due on Wednesday and the other two previous articles. Everything is due by Wednesday.

• Welcome to the final trimester of 6th grade! Please note our team does not accept any late work during the 3rd trimester. It is very important to stay organized and get all of your work in on time to do well.
• We are presenting our PowerPoint presentations this week! Be sure to have your PP on your flash drive, a printout of your project, and be rehearsed!
• Our next Reading Log is due on Friday, March 11. Students must read 2 or more books each month, log the book, and obtain parent signatures for each book read.
• Extra credit Essay for the Multicultural Center was assigned last week for 10 extra credit points or 15 extra credit points if the essay is one of the winners - due March 24. Good Luck!
• A “Dictionary Scavenger Hunt” sheet was assigned last week and was due Friday, March 4th. Students were given time to work on it in class last Thursday and Friday. Only students who were absent from class on Friday may still turn in the handout.

• The edited drafts of the research paper will be returned today! Students need to work on making corrections to their essay’s and have their final draft ready to turn in on Friday, February 25. The final paper must include a cover page, final outline, works consulted, and drafts of the outline and essay.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As a concluding activity to our awesome Greek Mythology Unit we plan to show the animated Disney movie Hercules to our students. While the movie is very entertaining the main purpose of showing this film is for students to compare and contrast the stories they have been engrossed over the past 7 weeks to the movie. Students will chart the similarities and differences they see in the characters and the plots.

Summary: Hercules, son of the Greek God, Zeus, is turned into a half-god, half-mortal by evil Hades, God of the Underworld, who plans to overthrow Zeus. Hercules is raised on Earth and retains his god-like strength, but when he discovers his immortal heritage Zeus tells him that to return to Mount Olympus he must become a True Hero. Hercules becomes a famous hero with the help of his friend Pegasus and his personal trainer, Phil the satyr. Hercules battles monsters, Hades and the Titans, but it is his self-sacrifice to rescue his love Meg which makes him a True Hero. (The film is rated G).

You have read the Odyssey play in social studies class. Now you and a partner will create a comic strip containing detailed illustrations, depicting only half of the main points below, regarding the Odyssey play read in class. You must use 8 or more appropriately sized frames and your comic strip should fit on no more than two pages. Your grade will be based only on your completed work. It will be worth 28 points. Students must include the following main events in their comic strip. Be prepared to include specific details regarding each event:
1. Odysseus leaving Troy
2. Odysseus’ ship blown off course
3. The crew land’s on the Cyclope’s island
4. Tell what happened on the Cyclope island
5. Tell how the crew ended up at Circe’s island
6. Explain what happened on Circe’s island
7. Tell what happened when they came near the Sirens
8. Explain the Charbidis and Scylla event
9. Explain what happened when Odysseus met Calypso
10. Tell what happened when Odysseus returned home

You may choose not to do the above comic strip and challenge yourself. You may choose one of the following differentiation assignments instead:

Important Information:
• Last week, students received requirements and a rubric regarding writing a narrative essay. The 1st typed draft is due Tues. 9/21. Students will do peer edits and prepare a 2nd draft to be turned in on Thurs. 9/23. Mrs. Alexander will edit the 2nd drafts then the 3rd and FINAL draft of the essay will be due on Friday 10/1.
• We are beginning a short story unit working on a variety of literary skills involving fiction and nonfiction stories.
• Our first reading log is due on Thursday, September 30. Students must read 2 or more books each month, log the book, and obtain parent signatures for each book read. Seedfolks can be included on the reading log and they do not have to complete a log for Seedfolks.
• Mark your calendars! Picture Day is Thursday, September 23.
• Parents that did not attend Curriculum Night will receive a conference form that will be given to each child. Please ask him/her for the conference form and please return it a.s.a.p.

• This week students will begin writing a Narrative Essay that is related to Seedfolks. Students will receive requirements and a rubric this week, outlining the entire assignment. Roman Presentation- Please return your choices by Wednesday, March 17th

1. Directions: Students are expected to create a 3-5 minute creative scene, informing our class about life in the Roman Empire. The purpose of the scene is to illustrate 5 or more significant and accurate facts about one of the given topics below. A valid connection and/or contribution must be explained (if appropriate) and 2 or more vocabulary words must be
used in the presentation, as well.
2. Possible presentation formats include: a skit, interview, persuasive speech, campaign, debate, etc.
3. Students may work individually or in a group of only two people. If necessary, students may ask for assistance from other class members but the extra students will not be graded on their performance in a friend’s skit.
4. Visual: Each group must present in costume and have a prop or visual aid. Costumes and visuals do not have to be elaborate.
5. Assessment: Students will be assessed on their part of the work completed and their participation in the performance. There will not be a group grade.
6. If working in groups, each person must submit their contribution to the group’s work. A final written copy of what will be performed must be turned in as well. For example: who is responsible for the props or visual, their contribution to the skit, and a copy of the final skit that will be performed.
7. Plan to use our textbook because a lot of information about the topics can be found in it.
8. Students will be able to use the computers and/or books on Friday, March 19th and Monday, March 22nd; therefore plan to complete some research and work at home.
9. Presentations will be held on Wednesday and Thursday, March 24th and 25th. If a students plans to leave early for spring vacation then the student must present before he/she leaves.

Please read the following information:
*Students will receive information regarding our upcoming presentation project on Monday. Please select 3 choices, complete the form, and return it on Wednesday.
* Last week I offered students who did not pass the Ch. 14 test or who earned a D, the opportunity to make test corrections and earn up to a C as a new grade. Students must return their signed metacognition and signed test by Tuesday in order to qualify to make the corrections.

Monday, March 15, 2010 –

List 6 or more reforms made by Augustus during the Pax Romana
Homework: Read pp.234-236 and answer the questions on the board- due Wed.
If you are planning to make test corrections you must bring me the signed
metacognition and test on Tuesday. You will make test corrections during lunch

Important Information:
• Upcoming research due dates:
o Monday, March 15: Draft Boxes of Power Point Due (by end of the day)
o Monday, March 22: Final Power Point Presentations are due! You must also be ready to present next week.
• The Chicago Board Options Exchange field trip is on Tuesday. Don't forget to bring your lunch and come to school on time. Remember you must be dressed appropriately or you will NOT be able to attend this field trip and your $4.00 will not be refunded.
• The 6th Reading Log is due on Tuesday, March 16. Don’t forget signatures!!!
• Money for Museum of Sci and Industry trip is due this Wednesday, March 17th.
• REMEMBER we accept NO late work at all during the 3rd Trimester!

Important Information:
• Students are to spend this week working on the FINAL draft of their Research Paper!
• Upcoming research due dates:
o Monday, March 9: All edited research papers will be returned by today
o Friday, March 12: Typed FINAL of Research Paper is due! This must include a cover pages, works consulted, corrected outline, and your edited rough draft.
• We will be finalizing our persuasive essays this week. Students will have time to make corrections and print their final paper on Tuesday.
• The Chicago Board Options Exchange permission slip and money is due on Tuesday 3/9. No Exceptions! Be sure to get those into me ASAP!
• The 6th Reading Log is due on Tuesday, March 16. Don’t forget signatures!!!
• REMEMBER we accept NO late work at all during the 3rd Trimester!
• I would like to request assistance from parents who know how to create a power point or are interested in learning how to do it. Please read the following information:
* Our marking period will end this Friday, February 26. Therefore all late work for Ch. 13 and 14 must be turned in by Wednesday, February 24th.
*There will be a test covering Sections 1-4, pp. 219- 226 of Ch. 14 on Wednesday. Students should use the same strategies taught for the Ch. 13 test. They should also study the end of the chapter study guide and review questions.
*We will not have Newsbowl next week due to ISAT testing. Therefore we will only have S.S. two days next week.
*We will follow our advisory schedule next week. Students will begin testing on Tuesday at 9:00 A.M. and finish at 11:30 A.M.. We will inform the children about heir afternoon schedule of classes.
*Remember there will be no school next Monday due to the Pulaski Day holiday.

Important Information:
• Students must have their outline conference with me by Monday, February 22. Once they have had their outline conference they can begin writing their 1st draft. Your first draft will be written at home.
• Upcoming research due dates:

• In class this week we are going to hand-write our first draft of the persuasive essay. We will type and peer edit it in class the following week. You will do all of this paper in school- out of school you need to focus on your research paper!

Please read the following information:
*Students were assigned a Newsbowl category last week because they will participate in another Newbowl competition on this Friday. In order for them to be prepared for the competition each student was told to locate a notable article from last week’s news and write a brief summary about it. My students were also told to bring a copy of the article to school to share with their Newsbowl group. The summaries should be brief explaining who, when, where, what, why, and how. It is due on Wednesday, Feb. 17th.
*Ch. 13 tests were returned last Friday.
* Our marking period will end next Friday, February 26. Therefore all late work for Ch. 13 and 14 must be
turned in by Wednesday, February 24th.
